Slow Brain Oscillations of Sleep, Resting State and Vigilance

The 26th Summer School of Brain Research, 29 June - 2 July, 2010, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The most important quest of cognitive neuroscience may be to unravel the mechanisms by which the brain selects, links, consolidates and integrates new information into its neuronal network, while preventing saturation to occur. During the last decade, neuroscientists have observed an important involvement of the specific types of brain oscillations that occur during sleep – the cortical slow oscillations; during the resting state – the MRI default mode and other networks; and during task performance – the EEG power and performance modulations. Understanding the role of these slow oscillations thus appear to be essential for our fundamental understanding of the essentials of brain function. Never before has an international meeting with excellent speakers taken place that integrated these three fields of study, allowing for crossfertilization.

The Summer School will take place from 29 June - 2 July at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam. Of note, it will immediately precede - and be an official satelite of - the FENS 2010 meeting which is also held in Amsterdam, from 3-7 July.

The aim of our biennial summerschool is to provide a teaching environment of the highest scientific level for all participants, both speakers and audience. Hereto we bring together a relatively small group (100 to 120 participants in total) of (neuro)scientists with a basic and clinical background, centered around a timely topic, in an informal setting. The participants of the International Summer School are senior scientists and postdoctoral fellows, and Ph.D students of many nationalities and different subdisciplines.
